Student Life Assistant Position Description - Hiring for Fall 2020
General Position Responsibilities
- Collaborate with student staff members, student organizations, campus departments, and faculty/staff members to ensure a welcoming, inclusive campus environment where all students can be engaged.
- Collaborate with various student organizations, peers, and supervisors in planning and implementation of major campus events, and provide post-event assessment to peers and supervisors. Events include: New Student and Family Orientation, Spirit Week, Family Weekend, MLK Day of Service, Clarkson’s Got Talent, arts events, service events, co-curricular events, and weekend programs.
- Review event submissions on Knight Life and approve or deny based on established guidelines.
- Assist student organizations in event management and advertising.
- Approve or deny digital flyers submitted to the Student Life feed on Concerto in accordance with established guidelines.
- Post and remove flyers and publications in accordance with campus policies.
- Attend weekly staff meetings and bi-weekly meetings with supervisors.
- Communicate effectively and professionally via phone, email, and in-person with peers, faculty, staff, and students in all aspects of the position.
- Advise and submit requests to supervisors for equipment and replacement items for the Student Center and event supplies, and make approved purchases as directed.
- Answer the Student Center Desk telephone, greet and assist patrons, answer/direct inquiries, and provide directions to all guests with a positive, customer-service-based attitude.
- Maintain an accurate equipment log at all times.
- Provide basic clerical assistance as requested (copying, data entry, mailings, etc.).
- Perform rounds of the Student Center, tidying rooms, submitting damage reports and work orders, and recording event attendance.
- Address and report any policy violations within the Student Center or at Student Life events.
- Keep the Student Center Desk, storage areas, and work areas neat and tidy at all times.
- Other duties as assigned.
Student Life Assistants - Programming & Events
Student Life Assistants - Programming & Events will complete at least one desk shift per week with their primary focus being on program and event planning. Student Life Assistants - Programming & Events will be required to work at small-scale Student Life events such as weekend events, co-curricular events, service events, etc. in addition to being required to work Orientation, First Saturday, and Family Weekend.
Student Life Assistants - Events
Student Life Assistants - Events will complete at least one desk shift per week with their primary focus being on program and event implementation. Student Life Assistants - Events are required to work at small-scale Student Life events such as weekend events, co-curricular events, service events, etc. in addition to being required to work Orientation, First Saturday, and Family Weekend.
Student Life Assistants - Desk Operations
Student Life Assistants - Desk Operations will complete at least one desk shift per week with their primary focus being on approving events on Knight Life, answering phones/directing calls, and checking out Student Center equipment. Student Life Assistants - Desk Operations will also be required to work Orientation, First Saturday, and Family Weekend.

- Comfortable operating and learning to operate basic equipment like microphones and DVD players, and learning to connect laptops to displays using various types of cables, as well as troubleshooting equipment failures.
Training will be provided for these items but basic skills in these areas are required.
Important Dates
This position requires full attendance at training and New Student and Family Orientations in August for a full week before classes begin as well as training and New Student Orientation in January for three days before classes begin. This position requires full attendance at Family Weekend in October, and various other events that occur each semester. This position requires attendance at weekly staff meetings and bi-weekly meetings with supervisors.
Fall 2020 Important Dates
- Training and New Student Orientation: Monday, August 24 at 8a through Sunday, August 30 at 2p. (Arrive to campus/Potsdam Sunday, August 23, 2020)
- Family Weekend: Friday, October 16 from 4-8p and Saturday, October 17 from 8a-11p.
- First Saturday: Saturday, September 5 from 10a-6p
Reporting
The Office of Student Life oversees the Student Life Assistant position.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, bend and stoop. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Clarkson is committed to complying with the guidelines set forth under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Semester Appointments
Student Life Assistants are appointed positions on a semester basis. Once appointed, there is no guarantee that a Student Life Assistant may receive an appointment for future semesters. Each Assistant will receive a semester performance evaluation from the Office of Student Life which will determine the potential for continued appointment to the Student Life staff. Employment as a Student Life Assistant is “at-will” and either the Assistant or the University may end the employment relationship at any time.
